TJ Lyons, CRIS, OHST, CSP, Owner of Lyonetics Consulting, highlighted the importance of preventing MEWP incidents through proactive machine design. Rather than just protecting workers after the fact, we must focus on designing out hazards before they occur, considering the US is the largest market in the powered access sector – “this is an embarrassment to the US”.
TJ reinforced the idea that the safest place to work is on the ground and emphasized how proper MEWP selection can enhance both safety and productivity.
TJ also delivered staggering statistics, over 2000 workers die every year in the construction industry, and 5000 take their own lives. For every 1 death, 25 others try and fail. TJ also pointed out the challenges of an ageing workforce and the industry’s resistance to change, with the mindset of “we’ve always done it this way” still prevalent.
